Keeping Order: Making Boards and Committees

Actually Work

Mary Remson, CPP-T, PRP

What do you do when things just "can't get done" in a meeting? Or you can't get your Board of Directors to "modernize" and "streamline" their workflow?

This interactive 75-minute workshop should appeal to those of you who are tired of the chaos and just want a structured, professional environment during board and committee meetings. It will show that "order" isn't just a rule—it’s a tool for productivity. The workshop will cover these and other topics:

  • What are the differences between a board and a committee? How are their functions different?
  • How are boards and committees created?
  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of using committees?
  • Why do RONR and AIPSC handle boards and committees differently?
  • How should you handle the reports from boards? From committees? Isn't a report a report?
  • Can only the Bylaws Committee propose a bylaws amendment? Can a special committee propose one? What about the board?
  • What can a consulting parliamentarian provide a client to eliminate "board" meetings?
  • What are "Small Board Rules"? Are they necessary?

Questions and answers will be taken both during and at the end of the workshop.

This workshop is approved for 1.5 CEUs on behalf of the National Association of Parliamentarians for NAP credential renewal.
